Dealing with the ramifications of social media addiction

We know many consumers are addicted to social media. Perhaps you are, too. Do you mindlessly pick up your smartphone and browse Instagram or something similar? Do you check-in nonstop? Do retweets, likes and positive comments create intense feelings of pleasure you look forward to?

What does this mean for us marketers, communicators and creators tasked with building engaging content? After all, it’s our job to develop sticky ideas and beloved technologies. Our ultimate goal is creating experiences that implant the brands we represent in the minds of consumers. We try altering their behaviors, resulting in brand affinity, habitual purchases and so on. Are we doing something right… or something wrong? This is the philosophical question Jamie Gyerman and Lukas Treu will bring front and center during their dynamic presentation.

• Adults are using social media two hours a day on average
• Social media interactions activate neurological reward pathways
• People can’t stop checking in
• Technology addiction is not harmless
• People turn to neurological rewards from digital technology and networks because their is little perceived cost

Lukas Treu
Lukas Treu is Lead, Content Strategy at AKHIA, an integrated marketing and PR agency in Hudson, Ohio, where he guides content strategy discussions and distills complicated topics into engaging marketing messaging. He is also a long-serving member of the Board of the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the American Marketing Association and operates a freelance writing business, The Mad Dash: Writing, Wordsmithing and Semantic Services. Tapping an academic background in persuasion theory and social psychology, as well as a fascination with the ways in which people think and interact, Lukas is on a mission to clarify communication and build understanding in the world around him every day.

Jamie is an Associate Director, Optimization at AKHIA, an integrated marketing and PR agency in Hudson, Ohio, where she leads the digital team and digital strategy for clients. Jamie is passionate about transforming business challenges into solutions and opportunities. Her early involvement with digital put her at the forefront of the social movement, producing first-in-kind campaigns for national brands.
